1997 GMC truck Z71 - air not cooling

Need some advice. My compressor does not appear to be turning on. I checked the fuses and relay under hood. The AC button lights up when pressed but the compressor does nothing. Is it the clutch? Anything else to check. Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome;
Could very well be the system is low on refrigerant. If the system is low, it will not allow the compressor to activate through the switch. It is a failsafe device that prvents damage if the system becomes low, or empty.

If the compressor will not turn on can you still send the freon? Doesn't the compressor suck in the freon? Thanks for your help.

The pressure switch will keep it from turning on altogether. The switch is located in line before the compressor. The pressure in the can will allow the switch to change state, (close), and then the compressor will turn on.

the mid-late model GMC's all have A?C problems to my knowledge, just know sure exaclty what the fix's were. odds are you're low on freon but i dont know where to tell you to check for a leak

Can't one still use a paper clip to over ride it and see if compressor turns on at least my 87 Burb will work like that.

if you do use the paper clip trick, dont have the engine running. turn the key on but not start. you dont want to blow up your compressor if it is low on freon. gauges are nice to have for such dilemas.
