water pump

Hello all, my wife's 99 gmc jimmy needs a water pump. How do I remove the fan. it appears that the fan clutch attaches to the water pump via a threaded brass coupling. when I try to remove it, the whole pulley slips and the belt will not hold it tight enough. what am I doing wrong? should not be that hard to do. does it have reverse threads?

you are going to need a fan clutch removal tool. It looks like a giant wrench that is extremely flat. I believe it to be 60mm. Yeah it is that big. I have one at the shop if you need to know the size, but you can also rent one, they should know the size you need.

thanks

thanks for all the advice, but here is how I got it. I left the belt in place, put a 13mm wrench on one of the water pump pulley bolts to hold it, then I put my super heavy duty adjustable wrench on the fan clutch collar and gave it a quick strike with a hammer. after about 3 whacks it came loose. I just had to hope that it did not have reverse threads. I got lucky I guess. just hope I can get it tight enough when I put it back on. Also, anyone know the torque setting for the water pump bolts?

30 lb ft on the pump bolts. when you're done and you tighten the fan back onto the pump....Just a couple hits with the hammer will hold it on fine. When the fan requires more resistance in the clutch (hot) the rotational drag will tighten it more than enough for you if it's not tight enough already.

lol^^^, i'm gonna guess that was aimed toward the hammer whacking portions. i would recommend a good length of pipe slipped over the wrench for leverage next time.

All I have to say is most auto stores rent the fan clutch removal tool and lucky for you that method worked but real easy way to break a bolt. also makes the installation easier. Further more unless your building a house directions should nat include hit it with a hammer. Do it right or do it twice.
