To rebuild or not to rebuild b2600i

My 93' b2600i quit on me this autumn and the mechanic said there was no compression at all. Some friends are telling me to rebuild the engine. The truck otherwise is in very good condition. Anybody have any thoughts on this. The engine had 161.000 miles on it.

My 2 cents worth would be to forget rebuilding unless there is some emotional attachment or the truck is in very good condition. An ex girlfriend had one, that I helped her with, including an engine swap (she claimed her ex damaged the original engine). I really liked the truck and looked for one for myself. They are pretty scarce, and parts for them may be hard to find, and a little expensive. I think a rebuild would be somewhat expensive and probably not as reliable as the original. Might you be better off applying the money to another vehicle?

My daily driver is an 88 Nissan with the 2.4Z engine. Pretty old, yes, but engine is extremely good and there are a fair number of them around for parts (compared to the 2600i). Seldom use the dealer for parts because of price, but parts seem to be available there, too. But age of the truck series is against keeping this up. I just bought a parts truck, but it is pretty well used up.

I am thinking of a newer Ranger as a replacement, someday - not because I like them, but because of mpg and relative number on the road. Another factor worrying me is the possible need to go to a diesel vehicle because of the envirophreaks and developing fuel situation in this country.

even of you kept the same truck, just got a "re-Built" motor, you will be better off cost wise then rebuilding it yourself. As long as the truck is in good shape, and the body, frame, exhaust, brakes... all that stuff does not need a ton of work, then you will be fine, if you need more then just a motor, then go ahead and find another truck. Just a thought though.
