If you are just going to lollk into some recovery equipment, then you should consider the best that you can afford.
Warn is probably the most recognizable name in winches, and they have so many to chose from. They also have a removable winch. This removable winch sits in its own craddle, and can be installed on a rear reciever hitch, and moved to the front if you have a reciever hitch mounted up there too. In many cases, it is easier to extract yourself from the direction that you just came from, and a front mounted winch is not always in the right, or correct end of the truck. Here is an example: Warn Industries - Premium Series: XD9000i Portable That 9000 Lb winch is also a very nice unit. Do yourself a favor, and please read up on all of the saftey stuff associated with proper wich techniques. They can store quite a bit of energy in the cable, and this can be a very dangerous situation. Plenty of folks getting hurt, or worse by not following safe practices. |

Yes, I learned this from personal experience (the first time), the second time I went all the way across to find out there wasn't any way around, and then coming back, I had to traverse thru the same muck. Also DO NOT rely on cable. Get your self a "tow strap" with hooks on either end. This has 2 uses, first you can use another vehicle to tow you out, or you can wrap the tow strap around a tree, and not kill it when you use it as an anchor. Tow straps tend not to slip too much when attached to a tree, like a cable or chain will. It also gives you that extra bit of length (you'll always need a little more)
