Strange clicking noise from under the hood

ok to start my truck is a 89 se-54 4x4 manual tranny and this strange clicking noise started about 3 months ago not that loud and at first it was only when i first started the truck about every 10 starts or so it would be there and by the time i put it in gear it was gone.
Fast forward to today where it has gotten worse to where about 50% of the time when i start it and drive the clicking noise is there even when driving, it matches rpm as when in neutral the clicking is very slow and quiet and when going 55 its loud and fast but it still randomly just goes away while driving like everytime i want to look under the hood and see what the **** it is. it almost sounds like something to do with the belts or fan but i really have no idea and as far as i can tell belts and fan are fine.
any help would be greatly appreciated even just a clue what to look at or for.
thanks

get a piece of hose and use it as a listening tube to isolate the noise and its location, sounds like a lifter problem

i think he has it. lifter noise. check your oil and make sure it is still good also. low oil pressure or no oil pressure usually gets the lifters to tappin first.

Pull the valve cover off on the side where the noise, see if your rockers and pushrods are oiling, also check to see if the oil port in the head is not plugged up.
