1999 B3000 Ignition Key Problem

I have a '99 B3000 that came with just one Mazda ignition key and another one from an aftermarket key maker that opens the door, but does not start the truck. Did the 1999 models already have the chip in the key? My wife had the truck in the (brand new) dealer in town a couple of days ago, and they told her that the key was not "electronic," and she could get one from a locksmith. If that was the case, why does the other one not work?

if you take the key to the homedepot to get it copied, they will check it first. But most vehicels come with one key that just opens the doors and trunk... some come with one that only opens the drivers door and starts the motor, but will not open the glove box and whatnot.... Mine is a 1998 and does not have a "chip" so if you are looking to get it copied, should be easy... but like I said, some will have a nonsense key that will not start it.

As a side note, even a chip key if copied without a chip will still start it, but it will only run for about thirty seconds for the ECM to signal the key, then if it does not find the "chip" it will then shut off the ignition and lock it up. So my guess is that key you have is just a dummy key....

if the door key will not turn in the ignition, it is just like junior said. early 90 model chevy trucks were like this and had a key for the door and one for the truck. auto manufacturers later done away with this by using a simple 2 or 3 wafer lock for the door and the 9 and 10 wafers for the ignition. this is also how they make a valet key. electronic or not, you can still get a key made at a lock shop. they sell vats keys and charge you an arm and leg to make one. seriously doubt you have one and should costs you no more than 10 or 15 since it is a double sided key without vats.

1999 B3000 Ignition Key Problem

Sounds like the key cylinder has been replaced at some point. I just replaced mine and now have a door key and an ignition key.

Hey paparcc has a good point now it could also be that the wrong blank was used to cut the key see if you can see the same letter/number stamped on both keys I made one for my nieces car and it was the same way it would only open the door for the reason being that it was the wrong blank and I agree Home-Depot should be able to help you Jr. knows what he's talking about.
