THe Blue Phantom

I have an 87 B2000 with about 100,000 miles. I've owned it for about a year and it runs great and uses little to no oil. I change the oil every 5000 and notice that for 3 days afterword it smokes when you start it in the morning. By the time you're down the street the smoke is gone. It dosn't show up again until the next time you change the oil. I've tried putting in only 4 1/2 quarts thinking it was over full but it still does the Blue Phantom thing.

Thanks.

Welcome to the forum and howdy from TEXAS. Change your oil at 3000 miles and start using Castrol High Mileage oil I would use it on our 91 MPV we had and it was the only oil that would keep the HLA's from ticking now I use it on our other MPV and my truck now I have always used Castrol in my truck but it up there in miles now that's why I changed. Also if you haven't changed out your timing belt do it with the tensors and while your there replace the water pump it's right there when you do the belt also re-torque the head blots your going to see that there loose and adjust the valves. Good place to buy Mazda parts and you get warranty and they last long.

The truck overheated and blew a head gasket. I had the head milled and put it back together with new gaskets etc. The previous owner had a new timing belt put on and it still looks new. I use Castrol but not the high milage stuff. The truck runs great but now after 2 weeks it still smokes in the morning. Maybe the valve seals are bad.

any more ideas?

smoking on startup is indicative (sp??) of rotten or split valve seal guides. mine on my truck are also bad but put in a bottle of oil treatment and it seems to have stopped all that along with the little bit of oil consumption i had. might be worth it to try a $3 fix. not that much money to lose in the case that it dont work.
