driveshaft removal???

1989 nissan d21 hardbody-2.4 z24, 5spd manual, 2wd, std cab, shrt bed

i am tryin to remove the front shaft (propeller shaft i think) of my 2 pc driveshaft to change my center support bearing. the problem im having is it is not sliding off the splines out of the tranny as i was told it should. the rear shaft is completely pulled the center support is unbolted. is there any kind of retainer to hold the front shaft in place?

The only problem I've ever had seperating a 2 piece shaft is the male end should be teflon coated and I had a freightliner that the teflon had came loose and balled up on the shaft where it joined the female end. I had to take a torch(rosebud) and heat it up to get it apart. I'm not sure yours is the same but i would guess it is teflon coated. Just a thought. Hope it helps. Will the shaft slide at all??

There could be a screw on dust cap on the male end as well. Look and see if it looks like there is a collar that is part of the male shaft that screws to the female side.

Normally is just a threaded dust cap that hold grease and packing in the slip yoke. I'd say its not likely you will hurt it seperating it if you take the cap off. But DO MARK YOUR SPLINES so you put it back togehter exactly the way it came apart or you will throw off your balance. Not positive about Nissan though. How do you intend on getting the old carrier bearing off and the new one on? I have beat them off before. Wow, that did not sound good !!! And beat them back on but found it was just easier and better insurance not to damage anything to pay a machine shop to press it off and on.

The front part of the driveshaft where it goes into the tranny is what wont come out or move at all. neither in or out!! cant see anything that would hold it in unless it spun on the splines(hope not). and as for the bearing....i cant change it till i get the front shaft off. but i was definately goin to have a shop do it as ive heard alot of horror stories from "beatin it off and on" lol.

sometimes they are quite difficult to get off. i have had to take a 5lb shop hammer and wayleigh the tar out of it for several minutes and eventually, it will come off. but you must be mindful of where and how hard you hit that yoke. hit on the hard shoulder and spin around and hit it on the opposite side.

So do you have the flange type that bolts on the rear of the trans? Or is it just a splined joke that goes into the trans? Japs do some funky stuff at times. Maybe its just a seal ring or something of that nature. Do you have a small rubber mallert? Maybe bump it around a bit with a rubber mallet. I much doubt you can hurt anything doing that. Or a pry bar if you can find somewhere to get a bite on it.

yeah its just a splined yoke. but will not move in or out at all with a mallet or prybar or anything. and cant find anything that would be holdin it back. im just worried if i put too much pressure ill break the shaft or trans. but looks like a come-a-long, a sturdy placement, and a lot of pressure is in the near future. thanks for the info and tryin to help!!!
