computer help

Our old computer was an HP with Win 98 on it.

Our new computer is an HP with Vista.

I went to get a picture from a CD burned on the old comupter and guess what? I can't get them to open on the new computer.

Anyone have any clue on this matter?

I went into the correct drive since it is the only one I have right now for burning/playing.

Reckon I might have to get into a chat session Monday with HP if I can't a simple answer here....lol

I hope the new computer didn't mess the cd up because as pictures go they can't be replaced.

Anyone have any clue on this matter before I make myself bald from frustration?

if you look at the bottom of the page where you would view them there should be different settings. it is the right below where you would enter the save name. it should be a drop bar where you can choose bitmap, jpeg, and a few other but there is one for all files and then they might pop up

Windows 98 will encode things differently then Vista. They made it really user freidnyl and interchangable with XP but there is some communication issues. Vista is known for bugs anyways. My sugestion is open a private view only folder in photobucket on the CPU with '98, open all your photos there, then log on to it with the new PC and download them. XP had an update recently for this so files can be transfered easily, but I am not sure if windows '98 had a similar update. Not to sound out of line, but since it is very outdated, it may have been over looked. Now this will work with pics, if you have music, or documents I am not sure what to tell you there. I will look later and see if there is a download from either miscrosoft or its partners for a file conversion program that might help as well. I hope this does make sense though.

in all honesty the actual files should be the same if they are .jpg, .gif, .bmp extensions etc...

They only thing that might be different is the way they were burnt onto the cd. xp and vista use a different file allocation format. if 98 is the fats format and vista is the nats format (or vice versa) that is most likely the problem. I think xp was the only OS that could support both.

depending on the amount of pictures you might have to do like jr recommended and upload them to an online host and download them to the new puter.

do i have you wondering now?? i still do have my 110 but do not use it. my wife had me buy this olympus and is trying to talk me into buying a new one. they are digital. you know, it has a screen on the back instead of a viewing window. does this mean i am out of date??
what is really sad about all this is that the computer that i am typing from at home i built myself from components bought from Frys. the case looks like the front end of a beamer with the blue leds and plexi front and sides.
