| Home construction question When we bought this house there were a lot of unfinished projects. One of the major (which we are hoping to put off) was a 2 car garage that they started to convert to rec room. Between this rec room and the new garage is an overhang that was not finished from the underside. Normally we would think no big deal, except without that and the rec room being finished there is a small gap that will allow things into the rec room. By things I mean BATS! I have encountered two so far (not so pleasant at 4:50am) but they can't get into the rest of the house. So we think closing this underside section off would work as a fix but not sure what type of material you are supposed to use since it is not directly exposed to weather but is an outside wall of sorts. Any opinions would be appreciated.

| for right now use either small wire like chicken only smaller or use spray can of crack foam , there are different kinds , so get the kind for windows and doors as it won't expand that much , good to keep out drafts too . shd |

| I'd say someone did a quicky job. Looks like the new truss was fit by hacking the old roof. Install the missing blocks between each of the trusses on the Rec room. Use a 2x whatever height and just toe nail them in. A small gap for venting at top is ok. . ![]() |

| Quicky job, no I think that is the way he did things, the guy couldn't even put a 90 degree corner in the fence and instead of plugging the nail holes on the crown molding, they painted over the molding but you still see the nails. Thanks for the advice, must forward to hubby

| This isn't your mustang (or should I say OUR mustang). Besides, gorilla tape works better.

| Closing up the soffit vent like that will lead to moisture problems later on down the road Crab. Better, IMHO, to use galvanized wire screen to block the bats (and birds) while still allowing airflow. And FWIW, those bats are probably eating their weight in bugs every couple of days and it would be a shame to "lose" them. Consider putting up some bat houses on nearby trees and other structures.

| Hey Moos, did I just see the bat you were talking about ? Bernie I agree about handling the moisture. I did suggest some cheap venting above. I had commented more then lost the comments when I adjusted my post to reflect my observation on the new truss install. What is a common practice in many places is to install the 2x's filling the gap, but to drill a pair of 2" breather holes in each before nailing. A roof vent may be needed, but this is CA we're talking about, so it's always sunny, even at night, right ? |
