Yep, what WE call the Oakland Bay Bridge. Will be out of service at least 24hrs.
That's a long time for a bridge that's 6 mi long and 10 lanes wide, full every day.
That bridge goes East-West across the SF bay, 90deg to Golden Gate Bridge.

It's actually like two bridges end to end meeting on a little island.
West bridge, aka the suspension span, is, um, just hanging in there.
East bridge, aka the cantilever section, is being replaced long term.
That the side that collapsed in the 1989 earthquake during the world series.

They are building the replacement east bridge alongside the existing one.
Here's why it matters (to anyone it happens to matter to):
They closed the bridge for the 3 day weekend in Sept, so they could
literally slide the 300' joint section of old bridge to island out of the way,
and slide the new bridge joint section into it's place.
This makes for a psychotic zig-zag because the new bridge is not ready to go.

It was so stressful on the bridge that welded plates (big!) started tearing loose.
So they patched it and declared "ollie ollie otson" or something - all ok.
The cable that snapped today came down on top 5 lane deck,
bring its friend the anchor, with it.
Got some cars and a truck, some injuries.

The east bridge is built like an Erector Set toy looking arrangement,
lots of towers and crossed beams. The cables are rigged to spead the weight.
Ever see one of those movie scenes where the pieces start snapping off in sequence ?
I'd almost bet we are going to see this happen again.

news of bridge failure gets around fast on the news. that's what tv ratings live for, death, destruction, mass chaos and not being able to get your morning double mochachino latte with non fat cream because a bridge collapsed.

that piece of news was not what concerned me. it was the gang rape of a 15yr old girl at homecoming for 2 hours is what caught my attention. as many as 20 people stood and watched or aided the rapists. that girl will never be right again.

Actually it's a pretty good system, but it's full.
Just too many people.
There are over 55,000 single family homes in my neighborhood.
Not city. and that doesn't count apartments, hotels etc.
