i despise the carrier unit we have. hate being the guinea pig for a new line of unenergy efficient products. worst POS possible. so was their decision not to spend the extra few thousand dollars to actually hookup the room controllers to the system using an 8 ft piece of wire, for lack of better terms. then again, if they would have given us our palm pilot to adjust on the go, like it was intended for, it would have been nice too.

Our home network is a 10/100 Ethernet hardwired intranet system with a total of 28 ports around the house and office. Internet comes in via broadband cable and modem, goes to a Linksys 4 port router and then uplinks to an HP 24 port 10/100 hub in the office. I'm currently in the process of wiring the entire house with Cat 6, giving two ports to each bedroom (4 total), four in the living room and dining room, four in the garage/shop, two in the storage room off the garage (which will eventually become my radio shop), one in each bathroom (2 total) and the remainder (12) in the office.

We currently have 6 PC's in the house (two running CentOS, Cpanel and Apache - [one is a backup system]), including a file server and a MySQL server, and I'm also adding 4 more PC's to the office (when it's finished).

The new printer is a network printer, and accessible from any PC in the house, or from any port. It's much easier, and simpler, doing it this way due to the limitations of USB 2.0 (distances involved are greater than USB can handle and some of the units have no USB capability anyway) Opening ports for a networked printer is a pretty simple matter, and only takes a few moments, and it's much more secure and configurable than trying to do the same with a USB printer.

added later: I just want to add that I've been doing this sort of stuff for more than 25 years now (got my B.S. in Computer and Information Sciences back in 1984, and my AAS in Electrical Engineering in 1986) so what I find to be "simple" and "easy" probably isn't for the average computer user. Doesn't make me "better" than anyone else here, it just means I have a lot of experience and practice with this stuff.
Reading my post I see that I came off a little brutal sorry let me better phrase it FOR me it is easyier to plug and play my USB to my router install software and plug in printer or hard drive to usb ports on HUB . I do apologize
for the way it came off and yes you are a PC geek J/K

Pretty handy that, especially when you're halfway to Idaho on a 30 day vacation and realize you forgot to set it to vacation mode.

Well, you can call the thermostat, but I don't think it can call you. I've not gotten all the parts I need for that function yet, just read about it in the manual.
