Bubba and Ray

Ray & Bubba (Detroit mechanical engineers) were

Standing at the base of a flagpole, looking up.

A woman walked by and asked what they were doing.

'We're supposed to find the height of the flagpole,' said Bubba, 'but we don't have a ladder.'

The woman took a wrench from her purse,

loosened a few bolts, And laid the pole down.

Then she took a tape measure from her pocket,

took a measurement, announced, 'Eighteen feet,

six inches,' and walked away.

Ray shook his head and laughed.

'Ain't that just like a woman!

We ask for the height and she gives us the length!'

Bubba and Ray are currently working for the government In Washington DC and helping to distribute the money From the "stimulus package.

Heck with wrenches and tapes,

this woman just barehanded an 18'6" flagpole.

Bet she has a hard time finding men that meet her standards.

Those poles aren't all that heavy. I put up a 25 foot one in my front yard all by myself. Only weighs about 35lbs.

So does it need guy wires or does it bend like a fishing pole ?
I assume you were not raising a wood one in the yard.

no kidding. my old man used a mast off a sailboat for the pole in his front yard... i can barely get the thing upright, even with the bottom end bolted to the stand (it pivots). i think its something ridiculous like 35' tall, and weighs a good 300+ lbs.

Neither... It's hollow fiberglass, tapering from 4" at the base to about 3" at the tip, with about 30" of the base slipped into the base sleeve. The base sleeve is 5" and embedded in concrete (about a cubic yard of concrete). There's a gap between the inner wall of the sleeve and the pole. You align the pole, shim it into place, then fill the gap with sand and seal the top with silicone and snap the cover on. Took half a day to dig the hole and pour the concrete, a couple days for it to cure, and about an hour to get the pole set.

I bought the 25ft. model, rated for 150+ winds with a pair of 3x5 flags on it. I've watched it with two flags on it in a 60mph wind and it bent maybe a foot at the top.

Fiberglass Poles: Fiberglass flagpoles

Installation instructions: Flagpoles Etc.: in-ground sleeve flagpole installation

Huh, didn't know they made em outta fiberglass... I imagine that would raise the cost some right??

Beautiful setup you got there, I wouldn't mind waking up to salute that every day.
