amc 401

first is an amc 401 a big or a small block, and what is the stock horsepower and torque? My buddys dad just bought a jeep with an amc 401 uin it and it turns about 500 horses, what do u think he did to it to make it that high?

The AMC engine was never a small block, nor a big block. Like Pontiac, it was all one block. The 290 parts will fit the 401 as will 360 and 390 parts.
Now, 500 hp???? This is more than likely wishfull thinking. Perhaps an early 10.25 engine made 300 hp and could make a little more, but to expect 1.24 hp per cubic inch from a 400 inch motor with cast iron heads is, well a stretch. Not saying it can't be done, but a ton of money has to be spent to obtain those figures.
This injected 401 with aluminum heads, roller cam, yada, yada barely makes 488 net Hp @ 5700 rpm. I say barely, that is a bunch of power. 500 is a big number.
