Well Its a 2000 Jeep Wrangler and the transmission is acting up. Whenever I have the clutch out and the gears working there is a bad clicking noise going on, increases as i go faster. When I have the clutch in and/or in neutral everything sounds fine, just like normal. I dropped it off at the shop this morning when it was happening but I was curious to what it could be.

Its a 5 speed factory tranny on a brand new 4 cylinder.

turned out it was the ring and pinion on the rear axle. the teeth of the ring and pinion broke off and broke the teeth of the spider gears as well.

What causes that to happen, is it a driver being too rough or just normal wear and tear on the axle?

only time i have seen a rearend come out like that is when the tire is spinning too fast and gets hard traction. either that or there is too much pressure there between the ring and pinion. happens to alot of log trucks. that is just what i have seen though.

my guess it the spiders broke first then got caught in the ring and pinion,

Seen it happen to a 2000 f-150 one time, guy was doing to many burn-outs (open diff) and wow, first diff i actually had to get a torch into to get it apart, it was amaizing, wish i had pics of that one....

Wow, if you have to ask if it's because you're too rough on it, maybe that's the cause. I doubt it was wear & tear, but I've seen crazier things.
