Did you smell the dipstick, diesel in the crankcase will give off a diesel smell, so will hyd. oil. they will mix with engine oil and thin the oil. hold a piece of paper by the exhaust at med rpm, if there is unburned fuel, it will show

The old coot is so afraid to start it up now since he drained the water out for the winter, and the crankcase full of this clear stuff. I told him whatever it is, its very oily, and we don't need to run it long enough to get warm or hot. But he is fearful it will seize this new rebuild.

When you go take a look, get the engine and pump numbers. I have a pretty good resource for injectors and pumps. I could get you an idea for cost, etc.

I did some checking today and it would be almost impossible for hyd oil to make its way into the crankcase. You have a rear main seal and a front transmision input shaft seal it would have to go through. Since the transmission isn't pressurized, I don't see how it could leak into engine. Just wanted to follow up on the possibility of hydro oil in crankcase. Keep us updated. Thanks

Thats got an old Roosa-Master Inj pump, IIRC, that is prone to leaking diesel into the crankcase. Just remove the pump, and replace the double cup seals on the shaft. There is a special tool to allow you toslide the seals onto the shaft W/O damaging them. You will also need the special tong-tool to compress the seals on installation.
These tools used to be quite cheap..10-15$ 10-15 years back.
Does this have the fuel tank located over the engine??? Dont overlook leaking lift pump either. In fact I'd suspect it first.

Thanks for the info Farmall. I have not been out there yet to look at this thing, but hope to soon. BTW, welcome to the forum. Hopefully you will hang around for awhile. Believe it or not, we have discussions about other than just trucks too, and there are a few tractor guys on here too.

I did call my dad, and he says the fuel tank is above the engine.
