should be an inertia switch that will shut of the fuel pump in the event of a decent accident (rollover sever crash etc) and most of them just have a button you push.

yeah you are right.

where is the inertia switch on a 97 jeep grand c... - JustAnswer

this is what I could find. Have you tried changing the relay? is it like a standard relay or different.

something else that I found is that if the crank sensor is bad it will kill power to that relay. not sure if yours has a crank sensor but you might want to check there too.

so, i replaced the relay, checked for voltage at the pump, was getting reading between 6&9 volts.... put the original relay back in, and same exact readings. pulled the relay, jumpered across and got over 13 volts....... the fuel clearly says 12V on it, so whats the deal here? also, can you believe i can absolutely not find a fuel pump for this thing, i'm just going to have to go with one that is the right size and flow, then re do my connections to make one work. and this is just to test it and make sure its just that the old pump i bad... but those voltage readings have me puzzled

I couldn't quite follow how you were taking your voltage readings.
Is this the set up you have ?
Using a jumper on this asd seems like could cause all kinds of touble to ECM.

never jumped the asd, jumped the feul pump relay. took reading on the connection at the fuel pump.... i've pretty well convinced myself the fuel pump is the problem, only issue is i cant find a replacement pump without going to the stealership

I know you have done enough work on rides to know a lot
but I don't know exactly what you did in this case
so I'm just going to kind of scatter gun it.

With the key on and the fuel pump wire disconnected at tank
I have don't believe you can get a 6-9v reading at the tank
unless the batt is bad, the relay load side is bad,
wiring is failing/poor connections or you meter is measuring stray air charge.
If you got both reads with the meter clipped on and not doing each time by hand,
and the only change you made to get the 13v was to pull relay, place jumper,
then the relay is 99% likely bad imo. Pump connected would be similar,
except that the pump connections could also be a problem.

If the drawing is the right one, no matter where you place the jumper
on either relay it will have at least one and maybe two
direct connections to the ECM. Not always bad, just being clear.
Trying to throw some ideas out there on the table.

Did you ever hear the pump run? No good ideas where to get replacement.
