Manual. Nothing like knowing that when the dial says "locked" it is, and when it says "Free",,,well it is. Too many times I see an auto hub disengage on a hill or when trying to perform a vehicle recovery, or the thing just does not work properly. Simple is best when reliability is concerned. More moving parts means the potential for failure is higher. Keep it simple and it will work when you need it.

manual. i can depend on my hand versus power wires and vacuum lines. same thing with the manual shifter. i can always get under the truck and shift by hand versus the stupid push button.

Then there's the added bonus of when NOT in 4x, only the wheels have to spin.

Give me automatic. Because when I am stuck in the mud or snow, I dont want to have to get out of the truck to use my 4 wheel drive.

This method can leave you stuck. Many hub assemblies require the wheel to rotate slightly to engage, and with an open diff, only one may turn leaving the other to never engage. In the case of the ford esof system, this exact method leaves trucks stuck in embarassing situations. If you think that you might need 4wd, lock the hubs in ahead of time, and engage the t-case when 4 wheel drive is needed, and disengage when it is not. Getting out and locking the hubs after the fact is not a very good practice. This could leave you stuck if you rely on the auto hub to function when you need it. These things never seem to fail when you dont need it. If they Do fail, you would never know it unti you call on the 4wd system. Waiting till you are stuck is a little too late. | |
