Narrow or Wide tires on a 4x4?

this is a very interesting thread. seems more people think that wider tires will go through mud better. in one aspect, i would agree with that as most mud tires come in plus sizes. my question to that is why dont tractors ever get stuck in the mud with those little narrow tires?? why do these big huge trucks with the tractor tires seem to go through the mud bogs so much better than the ones with the wider tires??
this is on the assumption that yall voted for what works best and not looks best. am i right??

Well I think wider is better for off road not mudding seeing as how there is no mud here in AZ I was going with what is relevant to me. I think the reason tractor have narrow tire is to CUT, if you will, into the mud and with the tall tread ridges I don't know the technical terms it does just that. Kind of packs it to give better traction

Well your part way right Crmzen the reason tractor tires are so much better in mud is that the lugs are larger and spaced farther apart so they can get rid of the mud easier think of them as a giant paddle tire . Also when your pulling a piece of equipment behind you you always have some wheel spin and if tractors had normal mud tires on them they would be totally useless in any wet conditions.

My answer was based on looks more than practicality per say.( IMHO 6" plus of lift and skinny tires looks wrong). I mean if your truck purely is for utilitarian purposes you would NOT need an aggresive lift and big meats to drive around the farm/ranch. Standard lift(MAYBE 3" suspension) and slightly overstock mud tires.

I grew up in the rural midwest and only a few trucks had mods done. Most guys were just driving the truck into town on weekends.(guns in rear window racks manditory, horse whips sticking out of bed stake holes optional) Sometimes washed sometimes not. We didn't have the luxury of a weekend truck/car and work truck.

I would also venture to say tractor tires are cheaper than Monster truck tires which is basically your only other option for a wider tire that tall and with an aggressive paddle tread.

HOWEVER I would LOVE to see farmer Brown with a sawsall and ginsu knife attachment back cutting his treads on those ginormus tires so his John Deer could "git it" ( that's "get it" for Ya'll Yankees)better.

i voted for wide cuz id rather my tires ride on top of the mud and slip n slide n spin easily. i just like to sling mud- im not lookin to maintain good traction in the mud- if i wanted good grip id drive on the pavement. however, i do want enough traction to get back out of the hole when im done mixing it up. otherwise i'd run super wide slicks and bring a come-a-long n some hip waders.

Hey bubba i have "Farmer Browned" it before with a grinder an home made template and 2 brand spanking new $1300 tractor tires. Cutting the lugs for a friends pulling tractor took me three days and 2 different grinders and i don't know how many wheels but when is was done you probable could of pushed me down and I'd of bounced right back up

Tractor is an IH 856 DPS(diesel pro stock)

That's AWESOME I miss going to state fairs back home and watching tractor pulls, sled pulls etc. now all I have is when Monster Jam comes to town. STILL AWESOME but I want to see some tractors too.

If you got cable or satellite get RFDTV tractor pulling Tuesday nights at 8 but now that thats outta they way i voted for wider tires on trucks for 2 reasons I like em in the mud and snow like Nissan boy said(sorry couldn't remember your name) i like to ride on top of the mud and snow. epically in winters cause my truck is not lifted i would be screwed in some of the bigger snow storms we get if i dug down in the snow dragging the frame and what not same thing applies to mud
