| Auto or Manual Tranny for pulling? What is the most dependable transmission to have in a truck for pulling a load? Most towing packages now days suggest automatic trannys with a cooler. Just curious as to what people who use their trucks to pull a trailer use, and how satisfied you have been. Thanks |

| I've always felt a manual was better. It gives me more sence of control. Just my opinion though.

| I'm going manual on this. Over all I perfer manual anyway tho. As for what you are asking it come to preferance and the history of the tranny in said truck tooking at to tow with. Back in the day all they had was manual and auto was a luxury item. Even today a lot of the 18 wheelers are manuals still. If a manual could not pull well I would think that the 18 wheelers would have all gone auto by now. I think the reasoning behind dealers/manufacturers trying to go auto as best setup is because of the weekend worriors that don't know you need to drive your manual slightly differant when hauling as apposed to empty. Also with the auto there is no roll back safety issue and the wear and tare on the auto stays basicly the same(clutch wise) when hauling or when empty. Also a lot of trucks like the 05+ F150 only come in auto with no manual option. But you can still get a manual in the 3/4 ton+ Fords. IMO its kinda like a double standard. A manual is not good for a 1/2 ton truck but its fine if you want to go bigger..... It confuses me, lots and lots. |

| Rob and I have always used manual trannys with trucks that had a "granny gear" I personally think they give you more control when pulling hills.

| I agree a manual is better. I have had both manual and automatic and the automatic we had was a 93 chevy 1ton and it realy couldnt pull it to good everytime we would pull the service engine light came on and when we took it in they told us everytime they couldnt find anything. Then we had a Dodge 1500 wich was standard and it could pull everything we asked it to pull. |

| I was always told that autos are better for towing, specially if you have that special tow package that comes with some trucks. I really dunno. I tow with both, and I know I get frustrated when I have to downshift on a hill. Depressing the clutch on a hill cuts power like crazy, whereas with an auto, it does it itself without slowing it down. I'd use both, doesn't matter to me

| The towing package is usually just a transmission cooler to help the auto trans try to stay cool under a load. Alot of towing with an auto usually menas a degraded trans life where a stiick can handle the loads indefinately. If it isnt too heavy of a trailer it doesnt make a differeance. Hey look at 18 wheelers. They are stick because they last under alot of heavy pulling.

| Manual gives you a little better gas milage and savings your brakes if you know how to drive it right and of course better control.
