the cummins company was bought by ford.... doesn't mean they had anything to do with them.....
And as to which is best.... is to the individual. I have driven cummins, powerstokes, and duramax and I like them all for things. cummins has grunt... powerstroke has all around, and duramax is the quiet.... I like the quiet cause I have a new baby.)

Gm owns Isuzu, they are made in moraine Ohio. All the big three have alliances with overseas designers because the have more diesels over there

yes and no, ford as well as many other companies own a percentage of Cummins, thats why you can get an f650 or up with a Cummins but then you can get a cat too. The powerstroke is an outsourced engine built by Navistar (international) for ford under contract since they already had the equipment, it all started in the 80s with the international 6.9 idi, then came the 7.3 idi in the late 80s. in I believe 92-93 came the direct injection 7.3 powerstroke, the basic ford diesel for 10 years? other improvements were turbo and intercooler. Nothing wrong major until the 6.0 came out, the first year they had problems with overheating and turbos burning up, they fixed that. My neighbor has a 6.0 and uses and abuses it, solid workhorse, every motor has hickups.

dodge is about the only company with little to no input on the engine in their trucks, they give some specs and cummins pops out a motor, but at the same time, cummins will sell that motor as their own, for any application. The same 12 valve 5.9 can be found in lots of ford heavy dutiesf650 up, with blue paint and ford plastered on it, but you cant mistake the sound or the signature valve covers, its a cummins.

as far as all the parts that the engine makers and truck builders have in common, yeah they have common parts but most of that is due to the fact that specialized stuff like your injector pumps are expensive and it would be irrational for every brand to have their own designs, too much overhead. the system design that the parts are used in makes all the difference. I dont really care for v8 diesels but the duramax and ps are both good motors. the biggest key to the diesel engines success has been simplicity, or was now they are just as complex as the gassers.

So far the duramax has had the fewest problems with the dpf's but they arent certified for 2010 regulations, the cummins is. ford dont know. The cummins with all its exhaust system crud is still the simplest design, same power as the other engines and two less cylinders, design speaks for itself, also the duramax and ps both use garrett turbos which I think are a poorer design than the holset. but they all have ups and downs.

Kind of. Isuzu is Japanese, but the engine was designed in Detroit and are built in Morraine OH. Also, GM does own a portion of Isuzu.
