I just picked up a 93 3.0 v6 with 110,000 miles on it. I have a reasonable amount of knowledge for cars, but new to the truck scene.
I have been searching around and know that the head gasket and belts should be replaced at this point. Also the suspension is going to have to get done soon very bouncy. The truck has 32's on it and it seems to ride higher then stock. The frame is in decent shape. Has the amount of rust that a 15 year old truck would have without someone caring for it. I am interested in wire brushing it off and recoating it with an underbody coat. The clutch was installed at 87,000 miles, but seems to grab rather far from the floor. What is the recommended throw for the clutch? Should I drain all the fluids? What recommendations for the cases and trans? Any recommendations or suggestions as to what should be done to bring this truck up to a reliable point would be great. After it is service it, I will look into boosting its power. I just want to get it in tip top shape to extend its life. I know there are a lot of questions, but all input would be greatly appreciated. |

I got a 91' Pickup a few months ago...it was running real rough...checked it out and found 2 dead cylinders....Pulled it and tore it down. bottom end was in ok shape but decided to rebuild it while it was out so we could have a "new' engine..........sent all appropriate parts to my machine shop and thats when it started!!!!...This really loud sucking sound pulling money out of my wallet!!....OUCH..!
This little engine has been the worst engine iv'e ever worked on.... both heads were cracked, had to replace, had the cylinders cut .050 to clean it up, and decked, just in case.... Got the new heads, and all adjustments done at the machine shop.... Started assembly and went down hill from there....needed new, knock sensor, new injectors, water pump, alternator, fuel pump & filter, ....yada yada....$$$$$$$ and still trying to get it running correctly......idles good...no power! Checked everything i could find in the book, but the Chiltons manual is pretty vague on the 3vze engines.....really vague... tracked it down to a silent vacuum leak....somewhere....???which is throwing off the computer on its fuel delivery..... Myself and 3 of my mechanics checked it out for 3 straight days....and i finally gave up and took it to another guy.....and it's taken him 2 days to track it down to the vacuum problem....................... I will never, ever get into another 3.0 Toy engine.......I could have dropped a 329 with all of the adapters into it for a lot less $$$$... I have had a Toyota's in my driveway for 20 years....and this has shaken my addiction a little........Gimme a 22R any day...... Hope i didn't discourage you, but my experience was not a very good one.....I'll get back to you when the "actual" problem is found......... |
