89 Toyota Truck charging system problem

Greetings to all that read this post!

I have a 1989 Toyota Truck with 175,000 miles on it.
This morning my battery light and brake light turned on in my dash, and I noticed a faint odor that reminded me or a hot componet smell.

Does anyone have any knowledge of this problem, that will prevent me from being a parts change-out artist?

Thanks
Benton,KY

take your alternator out and have it tested at autozone. it is more then likely your problem. when they go they do smell like burnt wire. if your running an amp or plan on putting a high end stereo i would try to get a higher powered amp.

390FE will become famous soon enough
If I'm not mistakes the brake and battery lights an is the tell tale sign of a bad altinator.

Mine did the same. I replaced the brushes and about a year later the lights came back on. The circuit board on the altinator was bad and I had to get a new one.

Towing with a toyota

I ended up buying a 2006 Tundra. I get about 20 mpg+ right now and I haven't tow anything with it yet. So I'm sure the mpg will go down. I looked at the Tacoma but I didn't want the truck I bought to dictate how big of trailer I could tow. I'm happy with the Tundra and hoping to get a trailer within the next year.
