IAC could be a culprit. another thought would be a buildup of carbon in the throttle body restricting air flow through the butterfly.

idle air control valve. it is mounted on the throttle body. its purpose is to read the amount of vacuum entering the intake so that it can adjust your fuel to idle purposes. when removed, you will find a plunger. this is how it determines vacuum. when faulty, it will not let the engine idle and causes the engine to die. i would look at cleaning the throttle plate first and then look at a fuel filter change. if both look good, refer back to the IAC.

Having the same problem on 97 Chevy 5L 8CY
Changed the fuel filter, changed cap & rotor, new plugs & wires even replaced MAF sensor. When I had the resonator off to change cap - rotor - wires, I sprayed into the top of throttle body with stuff from NAPA marked for it
Check engine light came back on today with code 102 'Volume Air Flow Circuit Low Input' Can't seem to find a picture of what the unit looks like in the Chiltons. Is this a straight forward repair or should I take to mechanic?

dieseling has always been referred to the run on of an engine after turning the key off
Joe you tacked onto the thread of a different type of vehicle, with what sounds like an erratic idle. Have you checked for vac leaks?

You were absolutely right about the term dieseling but someone gave me a "heads up " about decreasing my idle and so far my problems solved
