If you do change out the head buy new head bolts. I'm still wondering what's going on with your truck any progress?

Well you have to ask is it worth the lose of coolant and another gasket for it not to be the Tstat?
I agree on the blocked blend door, but usually even if its blocked, you can still feel some kind of heat seeping thru somewhere, even if you have to put your hands under the dash near the heater core, you could still feel the heat in most cases, even if the AC was on, unless there was a blockage valve to keep the water from circulating through the heater core are part of the heat and air system. Which some vehicles do have.

Just for purposes of trying it, and being a new fresh gasket, I'd almost say that gasket will still hold well enough to give it a try if you want to remove the tstat altogether and try it. Hopefully you did not use hardening permatex on the gasket. If you did, the gasket will tear then likely would NOT work a second time, fresh or not.

Ok guys we took the tstat out filled it back up and it never boiled over , we ran it a good 15 mins. we then took it up the road and back temp guage read about 1/2 but never boiled over so this morning we checked the radiator and its down maybe a quirt ? looked it all over no leaks checked the oil and it looked good , did a pressure check this morning and it didn't loose any stayed good after all that we ran it again for awhile no smoke , nothing in oil and no leaks that we could see so where did the water go ? and do you think it was just the aftermarket tstat that was giving us the problem ? also it seemed to be flowing through the radiator really good

Great, sounds like you bought a defective thermostat, or possibly had it installed upside down. As far as losing water, you say a quart??? That is probably because you actually filled the complete cooling system, burped any air out of it, filled the heater core etc while running it. Also keep in mind, as water heats, it expands. So if you are filling it to the very top, then driving it, you are going to lose some water out the overflow as the water expands. You can actually expect it to be an inch or 2 lower than the top of the radiator AFTER it cools back down from reaching full temp. Sounds to me like some very good news and you have found the problem. Now, get you a good working thermostat. Exchange that one you bought, and if its not a fail safe, be sure to see if they will let you upgrade it to fail safe if its not already. And do be sure to install it propelry.

Yep sounds like that was the issue. I agree and second everything Hotrod said so no need to double up the reading time writing it all over again

sorry it's taken me so long to get back but some stuff came up and had to let the truck sit for a couple of weekends . Got back to work on it two weekends ago wanted to drain coolent to make sure we had a 50/50 mix in it did that went to start it and it started rolling out the white smoke real bad ! still nothing in the oil also after sitting a couple of days antifreeze was still up. going to check it again this weekend and see where its at , but would say its the head gasket now, it seem to be fine after all the other stuff we did it never smoked at all then bam started smoking the temp seemed to be ok i didn't have a tstat in it becuase the local dealer had to order one but it was getting cold up here so wanted to make sure it woulded freeze anyhow did a vin check with the dealer head gasket done in 1998 so out of luck there don't have the money at this time to fix it the right way and won't be driving it much so was wondering about putting in some head gasket stop leaking ? looked at a couple that bar's leaks makes for head gaskets etc. my son said that the guy that owns the used car lot next to him has used it a few times and has has good luck but he uses the one that you have to drain and refill the radiator and i didn't want to do that since must say to run so many miles etc. and its way to cold to be without antifreeze in the truck so please give me your input on the stuff. thanks !
