| 22R troubles Ok. So I've been workign on this truck off and on for the last 5 months or so. Here is the history: Bought with blown Radiator and possible bad head gasket because it was driven quite a distance with the blown radiator. Found out the head gasket was bad and the head was slightly worped and there was a small crack between 2 valves. Found a head for the truck in good sondition. Brought it to the machine shop & confirmet it as a good head. Put it in and had a bit of a problem with a super tight timing chain. Found out I had an older 22R head not compatable with my newer 22R block. Went to junk yard and found new head after determinig the old head could not be machined to the correct height with making problems in the head. Had machien shop check new head and had to plain .005 off it to make it straight. Finally put new head on and got everything hooked up. Ran motor and idle was really high and motor smoked. Plugged up all vaccume lines that were open and started again. Idle really high still. Found out Idle was cranked up on carb and turned it down. Stared it again and it ran ok. Can back to it the next day with proper tools to lash the valves(feeler guage with correct sizes on it). Motor would not start. It would turn over and clank and clunk nd make those "not so good" noises. Went to take out spark plugs(never took them out when I took the head off the junk yeard truck). Well the threads of spark plug one stayed in the head and all theceramig and senter came out. Spark plug 2 came out but stripped on its way out. I haven't touched plug 3 or 4 yet as I doused them in PB Blaster. Now I gotta get soem easy outs for plug one and at least 1 heali coil. I never healicoiled anything before. I will soon find out how to do it and see if I need to pull a 22R for a 4th time(1 time was at junk yard). so far here is the list of things done: Pulled original head Had original head tested andfound bad Located good head Had good head tested and found good Installed good head(1) with new head gasket and new head bolts Removed good head (1) because it was wrong head. Found Good head(2) Had good head (2) tested and foun to be good Installed good head(2) with another set of new head gasket and bolts. spark plugs are stripping out of good head(2) |

| Helicoil on the spark plug hole isnt the greatest fix. Go to your local napa store and check about a spark plug thread insert. I have one. Costs around 40 bucks, but the inserts are designed for spark plugs and the pressures they hold back. Great little speady fis tool. As for the clunk, check the oil. I suspect a cylinder that has filled with water as my first culprit here. Let me know what you find out.

| Wouldn't a helicoil be the same. What I am getting is a heli coil(I think) it has a tool(tap) that starts at the thread size of the spark plug than makes it a tad bigger than another tool is used to insert the heli coil. Unless this is the spark plug thing you are talking about. And don't tell me there is water in the cylinder because than the block is cracked somewhere. And the motor was just running before I heard the clunking and not starting sound. |

| Not necaeearily cracked, Could be a problem with the new head gasket, Just cause its now doesnt mean its good . I have recieved alot of bad parts in my life. No a helicoil isnt the same. This tool actaull makes a seat for the plug to ride on. Wait...i went out to the shop and got the package. It is made by helicoil. It is called (sav-a-thread) Part number 5334-14. Might be a different part number for your application as your truck is metric.I am sure there is some way a computer literate person can find this online. Give it a look. Hope it helps. Oh look closely at the plugs when you pull them and let me know if you see anything odd.

| Well plug 3 and 4 came out without any problems. I did have time to fix cyl 2 with the helicoil (BTW it does say smark plug on the box). The easy out was just spinning in the hole of the spark plug threads that was there. I am using a square type easy out and may not have tapped it into the hole far enough. Other situation came up that T'd me off an the easy out went flying acrossed the garage and I can't find it(not that I looked real hard for it yet). It'll probably be a week before I get back to it. My one night this week to work on the truck was shortened from about 3-4 hours to 30-45 minutes (Ya i was flippin t'd off |
