sneaky used car salesmen and smog

My mechanic tells me that my cat is totally ****ed (determined this with laser thermometer), and the muffler may be as well. It is all the original exhaust from 1992. I just bought the truck from a used car dealership (stupid move i know) a few weeks ago. The mechanic brought it to my attention that this means it would have been impossible for the truck to pass smog...they must have cheated. Is there a legal consequence for the dealership cheating on smog? something i could use to persuede them to pay for the new exhaust i need? maybe a couple other things (lol)??

I'm giving them a call tomorrow and i'm just going to simply ask them how it passed smog, and see what they say...my guess is that if they broke the law, they'll jump on the opportunity to pay for it to save their ***** from legal problems. anyone have a similar situation or any insight here? how should i go about doing this?

****in edit: and what the ****ing **** is the deal with all this ****ing censorship?

Ask them where it was smogged. let them know if they dont offer to help you are gonna persue their partner in crime

some states only need smog inspection done every other year.

Does the dealer do there own inspections?? If they do than that explains it. The dealer is out to make money and if they were to replace the exhaust they would have to jump the price and possible not sell the truck because it was already slotted for a well over book price to start with. I have serous "issues" with used car salesman and used car lots. I'v been burnt once and it was 1st and last time. I did buy a used car after but bought off a dealer lot used car section and worked the salesman hard to get the price down 3K. I also bout a couple other vehicles private party but they were older vehicle that a used lot would just auction off if they had them.

if the dealer inspected it, there is 30 days after the inspection that even if there is no way on earth they never lied, after 30 days it dont matter. The argument will be, "well it musta just gave out", and they are not responsible.

Reason why? one part of inspection states that emergency brake has to work. Well, it might barely work, but whose to say 3 months down the road the cables seize. Is that the inpecting garage's fault?? no, however to cover that spectrum, it entails almost everything which sux because too many dealerships take advantage of that. By rights the dealership should give you a new exhaust, but legally if its 30 days after the dealer inspection, nothing can be done.
