Exclamation 93 Toy 22RE big trouble

I have a 93 Toyota truck that I can't get the timeing set, no matter how the chain is put on the gears will not line up any closer than 5 degrees before TDC. Has any one ever seen this problem? The head has been shaved twice by 2 different shops is there any way that too much has been taken off so the timeing marks wont line up?

are you doing a rebuild? if so do you have the right parts. or are you just trying to set the timing?

I'm doing the rebuild, and it's a new timeing chain set. The only thing I can think of is if the head has been shaved too much the distance from the top and bottom gear are closer throughing it off by 5 degrees?

the head wouldn't throw off the timing. make sure the dot on the crank gears is pointing up. then put the chain on the cam gear with it off the cam. slip the chain on the crank gear with the two dots lining up. rotate the cam untill the dowel is facing 9 o'clock and slip it on. hope i didn't confuse you.

The mark on the crank has to be at 6 o'clock or the piston will be at BDC insted of TDC, the problem is when I take out the slack opposit of the tensioner one of the gear will be off center, which put the timeing either 5 degrees BTDC or ATDC depending on which one I turn the crank or the cam.

I seem to remember when changing my timing chain a few weeks ago that the crankshaft had to be about ?8 Degrees? BTDC when the camshaft was at TDC. My chilton's manual certainly helped me since it runs fantastic apon putting it all back together.

i'm not familiar with toy. engines, but if they're anything like chevys then the #1 piston should be tdc with the crank dot facing 12 o'clock. are you sure your looking at the right cylinder?

"the problem is when I take out the slack opposit of the tensioner " do you have a belt instead of a chain?

Yeah I'm sure that piston #1 (the closest to the front of the pickup) is NOT supposed to be at TDC at the same time as the camshaft. I put piston #1 slightly counterclockwise of TDC while the camshaft was perfectly at 12 'o clock. I believe it was somewhere from 5-8 degrees and leaning at 8 degrees. If you need to know specifically I can look it up for you.

Yes, mine is a chain but unfortunetly I had a friend do most of the hard work during the timing chain replacement. Wish I could remember how difficult the exact part of wrapping the chain on the cam after getting them at their correct rotation.

Well I was about to through in the towel and buy a long block for it but, the place I was getting the engine from confirmed my fears. It was realy a relief, he is a Toy guy and he said the head was to thin. It has been shaved twice. I'm going to replace the head with the new High Pro head and I still have enough money to put some headers on. I have already put a new crank, .020" over pistons and rods. It should be good once I get all the parts in. I'll let you know how it turns out. Thanks for the help

Sounds like that 22R should put out some power. Hope it's going into something fun.
