New to Forum and need HELP!! Bad Crank???

Hello,

I'm new to the fourm and have a Big Problem (maybe) to start off with. I have a 1987 Toyota Reg Cab Short Bed 4x4 with a 22re and 5 speed. The problem is the harmonic balancer is loose and just spins! The shop is telling me that the crank is busted and I need a new crank or a new/used engine. I have a hard time bying that the crank is busted as the truck will start and run!!!! Has anyone had the issue? If it is a bad crank is it worth fixing with 152000 miles on it.

Thanks for the help!
Bob

it probably needs a new key in the crank for the balancer. But if it spins loosely that is not to good. They are supposed to be a tight "press" fit.

you can have the crank fixed. like jw said they are pressed tight on the crank, shouldn't move. you may have to buy a new harmonic balancer or have a shop mic the crank to see if it has lost some material. a new crank cost a couple hundred or so.

390FE will become famous soon enough
150K is young for this motor.

Take the balancer off and see what the crank looks like. You probabaly can fix whats wrong and maybe just the balancer is bad also.

These 22R motors are pretty stout and hard to kill.

You can basicly use any 22R/RE motor from 85 to I think 94. 89-94 are all RE motors and the earlier ones are mixed between R(carb) and RE(fuel in-jected). You will need to swap over your intake parts if you get a 22R to replace your. I say thins because you should be able to pick up a good motor at a salvage yard for $200-$500. The 85 to 94 $ Runners also used the 22R/RE motor.

Update!!!

Thanks for all of the info.... Good News!!!! The crank is OK and all we had to do is replace the Oil Seal, Balancer and Key Way!!!! SOOOO I also had it tuned up and now it has a rough idle and wants to stall out.... It runs good otherwise. Any ideas? Is there an idle control on the truck that may be bad?
Thanks!!!

if you didn't do the tune-up yourself then i would check for pulled vacum lines and also check your timing, could have got bumped.
