92 K1500 oil cooler connector question

    I need to replace the oil cooler quick disconnectors at the oil filter adapter on my 5.7. I have the new fittings, but I can not find any directions. Am
    I correct in assuming that I need to remove the plastic collar from the line to replace the clip? What is the proper way to install the plastic pieces one he end of the lines?

    The old ones can be a pain to get out. If I remember right, you have to squeeze the metal clip in to release it. The new ones go into the tube and snap in place and be sure to put the orings in.

    Thanks. I saw that thread when I did a search. The ones on my truck look like this Dorman 800-701

    My short version of this: remove the air dam below rad (if there)
    giving easy access to the clamp on the lines. REMOVE clamp.

    Squeeze the plastic clip wings against line and pull them WITH line
    from the fitting. Yes they can be stubborn about letting go
    from the inside of fitting walls, little push in helps too.

    Going back on, plastic on line first, then together into fitting.
    You must get a good snap of plastic onto line, then again into fitting.
    Miss either and it will leak. :eek:

    Another thing to watch for is when re-clamping the two lines,
    maintain a rearward, towards adapter fittings, pressure on lines.
    Once that clamp is locked down, any forward lean will cause leaks.

    In my case the fittings were not leaking, came from adapter above.
    Pulling the adapter made changing the fitting easy and it's quick job.
    Just make sure you have BOTH gaskets before removing adapter.
    BTW now you know what a 13/16 wrench is for, huh. :cool:

    I have unposted pix if the need arrises. I also have the factory manual
    for my 94 plus the dealership printouts for this. They're all wrong.
    That's normal, point is I know what the corrections and specs are.
    Too bad you're not just a little closer, I'd drop by from NorCal.

    That is the downside of having a short attention span. Thanks. My truck is missing the clamp, which might be why the connectors failed in the first place.

    Props to the wife. I rushed down to the dealer to see if I could buy a clamp. Like just about everything else on my '92, it was discontinued. They said they could order it from a place called Vintage Parts for $14 plus $5 shipping and it would take at least a week to get it. I told them to go ahead and order it. I told my wife what the situation was when I got home and she suggested that we go to Pick-a-Part and look for one. Now you know why I married her. Of course, she really wanted to look for rear bumper for her '06 Tahoe. I was able to find a clamp, ash tray liner, oem power steering dipstick and some various other hardware that I needed. It was $11 for the parts and $4 for the entrance fee. Unfortunately for her, nothing even close to a '06 there. I called the dealer on the way home and cancelled the order. The quick disconnects were easy to figure out once I took one apart. Thanks for the advice Crabtruck and Semocoachworks.
