1999 Z71 5.3 Auto. Just bought this truck today and now this! I must have started it ten times when I was looking the truck over. Then after I got home this started. I tried both keys and it will not start. UGGHHH  It cranks and fires and the tach goes to about 700rpm then immediately it dies. The security light then flashes for a bit.

From what I am gathering this appears to be VATS related. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

EDIT: I waited about ten minutes and just checked the 'SECURITY' light is still flashing.

Try this see if not post back
30 Minute Learn Procedure

1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
2. Attempt to start the engine, then release the key to ON; the vehicle will not start.
3. Observe the SECURITY telltale; after approximately 10 minutes the telltale will turn OFF.
4. Turn OFF the ignition, and wait 5 seconds.
5. Repeat steps 1 through 4 two more times for a total of 3 cycles/30 minutes; the vehicle is now ready to relearn the Passlock Sensor Data Code and/or passwords on the next transition from OFF to CRANK.Important: The vehicle learns the Passlock Sensor Data Code and/or password XXXXX the next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK. You must turn the ignition OFF before attempting to start the vehicle.
6. Start the engine. The vehicle has now learned the Passlock Sensor Data Code and/or password

CC U R THE MAN!!! :btruck: It won't let me rep you anymore or I would sure do so.

Should I anticipate this to be an ongoing issue? If so, what is the likely culprit?

If this happens again, typically it is the Ignition Lock Cylinder / PassLock Hall Effect or the 2 thin wires going to the Cylinder
You need to check the connection at the Key Cylinder inside the Steering Column

The Passlock Sensor is inside the upper right side of the steering column.
The Passlock Sensor contains 2 hall effect sensors.
The Tamper Hall Effect Sensor is on the top.
The Security Hall Effect Sensor is under the Tamper Hall Effect Sensor.
Both of the hall effect sensors monitor the magnet of the Ignition Lock Cylinder through an opening.
The best way of testing is with a good Scan Tool, if you do not see any breaks or wiring problems.

Could be anything from bad connection at battery ..to the above .
Some way if it happens again..security is loosing memory...hard to diagnose unless you scan.

Had to follow up with this...Friday just before leaving for work it does it again. So I came back and did this learn procedure and got it working again and now the "Security" went away in the message center but, has reappeared randomly over this weekend. I am thinking about getting a new lock cylinder...what do you guys think?

Don,t know if that would cause prob. or not..best to scan..as not to throw parts at it..but scan will cost also.
Does it start and run good? I would see what happens then proceed..Mr Rat.
