The 1985 T3500 parkaway is dropping a lot more oil these days. What is involved in replacing the front and rear crankshaft seals?

Is this a small block, or, a Big Block engine?
What year did the start with the one piece crank shaft seal on these ?
If a one piece seal, the engine will need to come out, or the transmission back. The flywheel/flex plate removed and the seal retainer removed, seal replaced and re~assembled.
If it is the older two piece style, drop the pan, loosen all of the main bearing caps, remove the rear main bearing cap, take a rear main seal removal tool{can be purchased at a parts house, neat tool} or a long sheet metal or decking screw, pull out the upper 1/2 of the seal, snake in a new upper 1/2, trim it about a 1/16th to 1/8th of an inch longer on each end, be sure that rear cap surfaces, on block and cap are free of oil, install new rope seal in the cap, trimmed flush, apply some number 1 permatex to both cap and block mating surfaces and reassemble.
Be sure that there is no rope seal between the block and the caps mating surfaces.

That is the way I like to do these.
get that engine out to where it can be got to, hang it on a stand and do a complete re~seal job.

How do I determine which engine is in there?
All I can determine is that it is a 3.5 litre 1985 issue 4 cylinder normally aspirated diesel.

    Is this a Mazda ?
That will probably be a one piece seal.
You might want to go to the parts store, or call one and, ask them to look up the rear main seal then, ask them if it is a one piece.
I know nothing about foreign wehicles, please let us know what You find out.

It appears the engine is mounted inline with the frame so, Your choice, engine or transmission.
That is a one piece seal. CLICK

I own four of these engines in Mazda/Ford Trader trucks and yes the 3.5ltr mazda diesel rear main seal is one piece. The transmission has to come out for replacement but plan on changing the clutch, pressure plate and spigot bearing ( don't forget to check the flywheel for scoring while there)) as this is a good thing to do while the box is out. Front engine seals are replaceable with the engine in place as well.
