Fuel gauge quit on my '88GMC K1500 5.7. Entire sending unit replaced just 2 years ago. Can gauge be replaced with any after market gauge?

ground the sending unit wire and see if the gauge responds, might be a bad ground at tank or sending wire shorted

If it has bad ground would the fuel pump still run? The truck runs fine, have been running it for a month like this.

would have to check wiring diagram ,but the pump may have it's own common wire. I
think gauge grounds through the tank body, tank has a groung wire to frame. Not 100%
sure on this , been awhile since I worked on one.
